The US Army has selected three companies to design Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) prototype variants.

On 29 August, the service announced that it has awarded Textron Systems, General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, and SIG Sauer with NGSW prototype contracts that call for the companies to begin delivering weapons and ammunition within 27 months.

"These prototype (Other Transaction Agreements) will enhance mission effectiveness by developing two weapon variants under the NGSW programme, and 6.8 mm ammunition common to both weapons," the service wrote in a notice posted on the Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) website.

Textron Systems said that under the contract award it will deliver 43 6.8 mm cased telescoped NGSW-Automatic Rifles (NGSW-ARs) and 53 NGSW-Rifles (NGSW-Rs), as well as 845,000 rounds of cased telescoped ammunition during a 27-month period of performance.
