India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said it is considering a move to ‘corporatise’ the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) – a network of defence factories across India – into a public company as part of efforts to strengthen its industrial capabilities.
The MoD said in a statement on 16 August that the potential corporatisation of OFB, which currently does not operate as a company but as an industrial enterprise under the MoD’s Department of Defence Production (DDP), means it will be transformed into a defence public sector undertaking (DPSU) that is “100% government owned”.
The MoD statement was in response to claims made by OFB unions that the MoD is intending to privatise the OFB, with job losses as a result.
