Turkey-US agree to establish Syrian ‘peace corridor’

09 August 2019

Turkish and US military delegations agreed on 7 August to establish a joint operations centre to oversee the creation of a 'peace corridor' along the Turkish border in northeast Syria.

The announcement came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reiterated on 4 August his threat to launch a unilateral military operation into Kurdish-controlled northeast Syria to establish a 'safe zone' along the border.

The agreement covers the rapid implementation of measures to address Turkey's security concerns, the establishment of the joint operations centre, and efforts to return displaced Syrians to their country, according to a joint statement released by both the US embassy in Ankara and the Turkish Ministry of Defence after three days of talks.
