Iraq will build a new naval base on the Al-Faw Peninsula, it was announced when Minister of Defence Najah al-Shammari visited the project and military facilities in southern Iraq on 27 July.
The new base will be built as part of the Al-Faw Grand Port that is being constructed at the mouth of the Khawr Abdullah Estuary, opposite the new port Kuwait is building on Bubiyan Island on the other side of the estuary.
The Ministry of Defence said the base would be larger than the Iraqi Navy’s current base at Umm Qasr. It also released a video showing Shammari viewing plans for the new naval facility, including a computer-generated image with a destroyer-type vessel docked at the base, which appeared to be located on the eastern breakwater.
