US Defense Secretary Mark Esper will be visiting US Central Command (USCENTCOM) next week to help flush out plans to escort and protect commercial ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.
During his first working day as the 27th Secretary of Defense, Esper fielded reporters’ questions about some of his priorities and challenges countering Iranian military actions. One item on his list is a visit to the USCENTCOM region to better understand tentative Operation ‘Sentinel’ plans – a US effort to form a multinational maritime force to provide maritime stability, ensure safe passage, and de-escalate tensions in the Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Oman.
