Turkey threatens retaliation if US imposes sanctions over S-400 purchase

23 July 2019

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has said Ankara would retaliate if the US imposes sanctions over Turkey's procurement of the S-400 air defence system and that it will consider alternatives to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter if Washington removes it from the programme.

Çavuşoğlu indicated Turkey could use the Incirlik airbase and Kürecik ballistic missile defence radar site as leverage against the US, saying a process had been initiated, "but if the US imposes sanctions, we will give a suitable answer, although it is not our preference. However, if the United States takes a hostile attitude towards us, we will take reciprocal steps.
