Curtiss-Wright has been selected to supply two more Indal RAST (recovery, assist, secure, and traverse) helicopter handling systems for the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force’s (JMSDF’s) new frigate programme.
This is the same system that was selected for the first two ships in the JMSDF’s 30FFM frigate class. The most recent contract, which was announced by Curtiss-Wright on 15 July, will go on board two follow-on ships in the same programme, which has also been referred to in Japan as the 31FFM vessels.
The RAST helicopter handling system employs a cable system that connects the aircraft to a motorised winch beneath the flight deck to assist during deck landing operations.
