US Navy (USN) Vice Admiral Michael Gilday has been nominated for a promotion to admiral and appointment to be the new USN chief of naval operations (CNO), acting Secretary of Defense Richard Spencer announced on 18 July.

Vice Adm Gilday, who is currently serving as director of the Joint Staff, is slated to replace Admiral John Richardson, the current CNO, who was to have been replaced later this month by Admiral Bill Moran, the officer nominated for the post. Adm Moran withdrew his name earlier this month due to “judgment” issues.

Adm Moran, the former vice CNO under Adm Richardson, abruptly opted to retire due to correspondence he maintained as vice CNO with another USN officer who was then under investigation for questionable behaviour.
