The UK’s Royal Navy (RN) will deploy a second Type 23 frigate to the Gulf, according to a 16 July announcement by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD).
“Later in the year, Type 23 frigate HMS Kent will deploy to the Gulf, taking over from HMS Duncan , ensuring an unbroken presence,” it said.
It was announced earlier in July that the Type 45 destroyer Duncan was heading to the Gulf so that HMS Montrose , a Type 23 frigate stationed there on an extended deployment until 2022, could undergo maintenance.
Montrose escorted a British-flagged tanker through the Strait of Hormuz on 10–11 July to prevent it being seized by Iran in retaliation for the seizure of an Iranian tanker off Gibraltar on 4 July.
