The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) continue to incur heavy losses in its fight against militant groups, the US Department of Defense (DoD) said in a report covering events in Afghanistan between 1 December 2018 and 31 May 2019.

Released on 12 July, the June 2019 edition of the semi-annual Pentagon report ‘Enhancing Security and Stability in Afghanistan’ states that the ANDSF suffered casualties that were 7% higher during checkpoint operations and 17% higher during offensive operations compared to the same period one year prior.

ANDSF casualties incurred while conducting local patrols, meanwhile, remained at the same level as the same period last year, the Pentagon said, pointing out that “terrorist and insurgent groups continue to challenge Afghan, US, and coalition forces”.
