State Department reiterates the case for emergency sales to Saudi and UAE

A senior State Department official has justified a move to expedite the sale of about USD8.1 billion worth of US military equipment to strategically important Arab allies, telling the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the move to bypass the Congressional review process was necessary to confront “an urgent regional threat posed by Iran”.

In a testimony on 10 July, Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs R Clarke Cooper added that the emergency sales were necessary to “promote the vitality of our bilateral relationships by reassuring our partners” and preserve a “strategic advantage against near-peer competitors” such as China and Russia.
