The Indonesian Air Force (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Udara: TNI-AU) has formally inaugurated a new airbase on the island of Batam in Indonesia's Riau archipelago.
The airbase will oversee TNI-AU’s flight operations in a region that shares airspace boundaries with those of several countries, including Singapore and Malaysia.
The base, which will operate under the TNI-AU’s Operations Command 1, has been equipped with ground support equipment for the service’s Hawk 100 and Hawk Mk 209 light strike aircraft. The base is co-located and shares a runway with Batam’s Hang Nadim International Airport.
Jane’s has been told by a TNI-AU source and a source from the public affairs office of the Riau archipelago district government that there are currently no plans to base any fighter aircraft on the facility.
