Repaired spare parts and "assembly elements" of air-defence systems can once more be re-exported from Switzerland to Saudi Arabia, the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education, and Research (EAER) announced on 4 July.
The Federal Council prohibited the re-exports on 31 October 2018, a few weeks after the murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.
However, EAER chief Guy Parmelin informed the Federal Council on 3 July that the ban must be lifted as there is no legal basis for it. "The lack of a legal basis on which to base the non-re-export decision made it de facto a confiscation of property already owned by Saudi Arabia," EAER noted in a statement.
