Russia could still stay in INF Treaty, says NATO chief

05 July 2019

Russia could still salvage the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty because there is still enough time - although barely - for the country to destroy its new SSC-8 missile, according to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

The United States has announced it will definitively abrogate and withdraw from the 1987 treaty on 2 August in protest of the SSC-8's development.

"Admittedly, there is not much time left; the likelihood of saving the treaty is going down day by day," Stoltenberg told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels on 5 July after a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council: the allies' consultative forum with Moscow.
