Leonardo eyes EW mission data systems market

25 June 2019

Leonardo is marketing open/reprogrammable electronic warfare (EW) and mission data systems with an eye towards sending aircraft on sorties with the latest threat intelligence, Mark Hewer, the company’s vice president for the Integrated Mission Solutions, told Jane’s in June.

Effectively using EW and electronic countermeasure (ECM) systems requires having the right threat intelligence, including threat vulnerabilities, in the mission system, because understanding and predicting a threat’s behaviours and vulnerabilities is key to defeating or evading it, Hewer noted. This threat intelligence is used to interpret the information that the sensors receive, and drives the behaviour of the EW system. That intelligence is generally referred to as mission data.
