The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) will for the first time join US and Australian forces in the 'Talisman Sabre' series of military exercises in an effort by Tokyo to scale up joint operations with its defence partners in the region.

A JMSDF spokesperson told Jane's on 24 June that the service has sent Hyuga-class helicopter carrier JS Ise (DDH 182) and Osumi-class amphibious transport dock ship JS Kunisaki (LST 4003) to Australian waters, adding that about 500 JMSDF personnel are expected to participate in 'Talisman Sabre 2019' ('TS19'), which is scheduled to take place from 11 to 24 July.
