In a further escalation of tensions in the Gulf, the Iranian military shot down a US RQ-4A Global Hawk high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on 20 June.
The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said the US Navy RQ-4A Broad Area Maritime Surveillance-Demonstrator (BAMS-D) aircraft was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile (SAM) at 2335 h GMT on 19 June (0405 h on 20 June Iranian time). “Iranian reports that the aircraft was over Iran are false,” it said. “This was an unprovoked attack on a US surveillance asset in international airspace.”
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) earlier released a statement saying an RQ-4 entered Iranian territory without identifying itself.
