Raytheon has completed operational testing (OT) of its StormBreaker smart weapon, the company announced at the Paris Air Show on 17 June.
Originally known as the Small Diameter Bomb II, StormBreaker is the first weapon to use a tri-mode seeker – incorporating imaging infrared, millimetre wave radar and semi-active laser – to allow moving targets to be attacked from stand-off ranges even in adverse weather.
“OT finished in May,” Kim Ernzen, Raytheon Air Warfare Systems vice president, told Jane’s. She explained that StormBreaker had initially been certified on the Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle and that an initial operational capability with that platform is expected later this year.
