Korea deepens defence trade ties in Scandinavia

16 June 2019

South Korea is looking to expand defence ties with Norway and Sweden as part of efforts to pursue related trade and investment opportunities with the two Scandinavian countries.

South Korea’s military export and procurement agency, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), said on 14 June that it has identified an opportunity to export the Hyundai Rotem K2 main battle tank (MBT) to Norway.

DAPA’s minister Wang Jung-hong said in a statement that the K2 is being positioned to meet a Norwegian Army requirement to replace its Leopard 2 MBTs. The Norwegian Army is expected to require a new MBT platform to enter service in the mid-2020s.
