US officials claimed on 13 June that they had identified Iran as the culprit of the 12 June attacks on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman as analysts and experts on the region warned of potential military escalation due to increasing tension in the region, although they did not provide supporting evidence.
“US naval forces in the region received two separate distress calls at 6.12 am local time and a second one at 7 am,” Lieutenant Colonel Earl Brown, a spokesman for US Central Command (CENTCOM), said in a statement.
“US naval forces Central Command received the calls from the M/V Front Altair and M/V Kokuka Courageous, who were operating in international waters of the Gulf of Oman,” Lt Col Brown said.
