Spain says parliament must approve basing US helicopters in Rota

13 June 2019

The US Navy will need approval from the Spanish government to add a helicopter unit to the NATO missile defence frigates it has stationed at the joint base of Rota in southern Spain, acting defence minister Margarita Robles said on 12 June.

Her comments came after Spanish media said the proposed reinforcement was set to be permitted by Madrid without amending the existing treaty between the two countries.

The US Sixth Fleet announced on its website on 4 June that it plans to replace its four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers based in Rota with more modern ones supported by a helicopter unit between 2020 and 2022.
