Thales completes sale of hardware security business

07 June 2019

Thales has successfully closed the sale of the portion of its business responsible for its General Purpose Hardware Security Module (GP HSM), the company announced on 7 June.

nCipher Security, which was held within the company's Defense & Security operating unit, has now been transferred to US-based supplier of trusted identity and secure transaction technologies Entrust Datacard.

The divestment was prompted by Thales's acquisition of digital security provider Gemalto, which in December 2018 received regulatory approval conditional on the company's disposal of its GP HSM business. In a European Commission ruling on the deal, Commissioner Margrethe Vestager had raised concerns that without the divestment of its HSM business the combined company could have held a high enough share of the market to restrict competition.
