Russia's state-owned Rostec corporation announced on 5 June that its Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering (TsNIItochmash) has presented the first prototype of the Lotus 120 mm self-propelled gun based on the BDM-4M.
Rostec industrial director Sergey Abramov said, "The gun is fully equipped [and is] ready to operate in manual mode. All components passed entrance checks by the technical control department and the military."
He added that the next stage would be to develop the software that will allow the gun to operate with a high degree of autonomy.
Dmitry Melikhov, deputy chief designer of the Lotus, was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying the crew will remain in the vehicle in the automated mode but performs a minimum number of operations.
