Bulgaria moves closer to selection of supplier of two modular patrol ships

05 June 2019

The Bulgarian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has called for price proposals from the bidders in the tender for two modular patrol ships on 29 May, with the winner expected to be announced by the end of June.

The three bidders for the BGN820 million (USD472 million) tender are Lürssen, Fincantieri, and Bulgarian shipbuilder MTG Delfin.

Bulgarian Defence Minister Krasimir Karakachanov said on 17 May that the contract is expected to be signed by the end of the year, with the launch of the first ship in 2021 and the second in 2022.

The Bulgarian Navy’s requirement for modular patrol ships is for multirole corvettes for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, in addition to air defence, peacetime patrol, and search-and-rescue missions for both national defence and NATO and European Union-led multinational operations.
