US Second Fleet is set to reach initial operational capability (IOC) prior to taking command of the forthcoming multinational 'Baltic Operations' ('BALTOPS') exercise, Jane's understands from a navy spokesperson. 'BALTOPS', which is a major exercise involving the US and NATO allies and partners, is taking place in the Baltic Sea from 9 to 21 June.
This will be the first time Second Fleet has taken command of an exercise, and its role in 'BALTOPS' will mark a major milestone in the process of validating Second Fleet as an operational command.
