The Hellenic Navy (HN) received its first refurbished Lockheed P-3B Orion maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) from Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI) in Tanagra on 17 May, effectively regenerating the HN's airborne maritime patrol capability after a decade-long hiatus.

The aircraft, which bears the military serial number 744, is the first Greek P-3B restored under a USD260 million modernisation programme launched in July 2016. Led by Lockheed Martin in partnership with HAI, the programme aims to return five aircraft to operations at the P-3HN standard, the most advanced configuration for any Orion user, by December 2023.

The heavy maintenance, structural upgrade, and modernisation works should extend the life of the selected aircraft by 15,000 flight hours and 25 years while providing crews with new levels of situational awareness and operational capability.
