The Indian Army (IA) is planning to launch the Young Leaders Course (YLC) to annually instruct 400 enlisted soldiers into becoming officers.

IA sources told Jane’s that the five months-long YLC, which will start in September and be run by the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, southern India, will focus on developing the soldiers’ leadership and officer-like qualities. The IA is planning to run two such courses per year.

The training will concentrate on improving the soldiers’ communication, conflict management, decision-making, and English-language skills in addition to military etiquette.

Currently the IA faces a shortage of 7,298 officers, particularly in the ‘fighting ranks’ from lieutenants to colonels.
