Newly appointed UK defence secretary Penny Mordaunt has promised to fight for a budget increase for her ministry in an ongoing review of government spending plans.
At the Royal United Service Institute’s annual Sea Power Conference in London on 15 May, Mordaunt said it was vital to create an “environment where defence gets the critical investment it needs”.
“Now as I stand before you today, I can’t tell you that the Treasury [finance ministry] is going to welcome that message,” said Mordaunt, who replaced Gavin Williamson on 1 May. “I cannot tell you that the Treasury will agree with all [parts] of my message.
