US militia leader arrest underscores ongoing risks of isolated arson attacks and confrontations with security forces

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested the leader of the right-wing militia the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), Larry Hopkins, in New Mexico on 20 April on firearms charges. The UCP has recently been conducting high-profile border surveillance operations on the US-Mexico border, where it claims to have helped detain and then hand over to immigration officials more than 5,600 illegal migrants crossing the border in the last two months. It has publicised its activities in a series of online videos. Media reports said that individuals had told police that members of the group boasted the UCP was training to assassinate then president Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and George Soros.
