The US has failed to maintain the necessary investment to keep pace with adversaries in the Arctic, according to the recently updated US Coast Guard (USCG) strategy on the region.
The USCG cites needs for increased investments in vessels, aircraft, and communications networks with greater utility in the region in the report, ‘United States Coast Guard Arctic Strategic Outlook’, released on 22 April.
“Over the past 15 years, the Nation’s strategic competitors have invested heavily in Arctic-capable assets, infrastructure, and relationships, some of which are targeted at eroding the influence of America and the rule of law,” the USCG said in the report.
