North Korea announces test of ‘new tactical guided weapon’

North Korea's state-run media announced on 18 April that the country recently conducted a test-firing of what it described as a "a new tactical guided weapon": a move that comes amid stalled talks with the United States over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme.

The test, which was reportedly carried out a day earlier by the country's Academy of National Defence Science, was supervised by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who was quoted by Pyongyang's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) as saying that the completion of this weapon system was an "event of very weighty significance" as it increases "the combat power" of the Korean People's Army (KPA).
