On 12 April, the Taliban announced its 2019 offensive, designated Al-Fath ('Victory') Operations. The annual offensive has historically marked the start of the insurgent group's 'fighting season' following the melting of winter snows, triggering an increase in sustained Taliban attacks in urban areas and major Taliban offensives to capture rural and urban territory across the country during spring and summer. In the hours following the announcement, the Taliban launched vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attacks against Afghan security forces in Sherzad, Nangarhar, as well as co-ordinated attacks against security forces at the outskirts of Kunduz city in which eight people were killed.
