General Dynamics Electric Boat awarded Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) a USD727.4 million contract modification to continue the procurement of long-lead-time material for Virginia-class Block V submarines.
The Virginia-class boats are being built under a teaming agreement combining Electric Boat and HII's Newport News Shipbuilding. The ships will be taking over the attack-submarine (SNN) missions as the current fleet of Los Angeles-class boats leave the service.
With the modification, the overall contract amount has reached USD1.04 billion, HII reported. The yards have already started to manufacture material for the Block Vs, Dave Bolcar, Newport News' vice-president of submarine construction, said.
US Navy (USN) submarine programmes are anchoring the shipbuilding plans for the service's proposed fiscal year 2020 (FY 2020) spending plan.
