USN justifies carrier cuts even as the service awaits further study

Pushed to justify proposed cuts in the aircraft carrier force during a recent Congressional budget hearing, top US Navy (USN) officials reiterated a plan to shift funds to other programmes, but they still noted current studies could change the service's plans.

Not only is the USN conducting a force structure study to further review its carrier-cutting plan, but the service officials acknowledged on 10 April during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on the fiscal year 2020 (FY 2020) budget proposal that the Pentagon Joint Staff is also studying national carrier-force needs.

The USN's FY 2020 budget request includes a proposal to eliminate the refuelling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) and retire the ship early.
