Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed on 11 April that its programme to design, develop, and build a submarine has “entered the next stage”, despite hurdles that some foreign suppliers are facing in participating in the project.
The MND said its submarine project is continuing “according to the planning process [and has] smoothly entered the next stage”. The MND also confirmed that it has recently handed over a report on the progress of the submarine project to the country’s National Assembly.
The MND statement followed recent comments from defence minister Yen De-fa, who said in a report by the state-run Central News Agency (CNA) that the “contract design phase” of Taiwan’s submarine project has been completed and that the MND expects a prototype of the platform to be completed by 2024.
