The Jamaican Government has ordered several Thales's Coast Watcher 100 coastal surveillance systems to strengthen its capabilities.

Under the USD30 million contract, the company will supply the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) with a turnkey system built around several Coast Watcher 100 radars, electro-optical sensors, and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) radios. It will also deliver a National Control Centre that will process data from radars and sensors to provide operational capacity to the JDF.

The Jamaican Information Minister, Ruel Reid, announced the award during a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on 13 February. Reid said the first instalment will begin before the end of the year and continue over the next two years.

The Coast Watcher 100, manufactured in Rouen, is an X-band long-range surface and air surveillance radar designed for round-the-clock detection of small targets in harsh environments. The system has an instrumented range up to 100 n miles and a range resolution down to four metres.

The radar can detect surface and air targets ranging from inflatable dinghies to warships, helicopters and aircraft in low-level flight.

According to the company, The Kinematic Scan To Scan© signal processing technology of the algorithm, enables the radar to perform a precise filtering of all environmental clutters, including extreme weather conditions, allowing for the precise detection and discrimination of small targets, while also offering a low false alarm rate.

This system is built for maritime surveillance, through detection, tracking, and identification of small, fast, and highly manoeuvrable targets as well as low-altitude airborne threats in challenging environments such as high seas and rain. The radar provides a high sea and rain clutter rejection thanks to its frequency agility, circular polarisation, high resolution, and Doppler processing.
