The Piranha 5 armed with the Elbit UT30MK2 remote controlled weapon station with a 30 mm cannon has completed static and dynamic tests, General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) announced in a 9 April press release.
The company added that the UT30MK2 exceeded customer requirements and that this milestone qualifies the system for Romanian requirements. The GDELS press release also states that another milestone, Romanian company Uzina Mecanică Bucureşti’s (UMB’s) readiness to manufacture the Piranha 5, had been reached.
Oliver Dürr, vice-president of wheeled vehicles and managing director of GDELS-Mowag, is quoted by the press release as saying, “Our collaboration with UMB will create a sustainable benefit to the Romanian economy and reliability to the Romanian Army.”
The tests were conducted on 28 March in the presence of officials from the Romanian procurement authority at a firing range near Camp Rena in Norway.
