Saab to deliver Sea Giraffe AMB radars for Canada’s Joint Support Ships

08 April 2019

Saab has been contracted by Lockheed Martin Canada to supply Sea Giraffe AMB 3-D surveillance radars for the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN’s) two new Protecteur-class Joint Support Ships (JSS).

Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards Co. Ltd is prime contractor for the JSS programme under the wider umbrella of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. The new ships, to be named HMCS Protecteur and HMCS Preserver, are intended to provide underway support (liquids and solids) to naval task groups, limited sealift, and support to operations ashore. The ship design, provided by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Canada, is adapted from that of the German Navy’s Berlin-class replenishment ship.
