Australia has announced a series of grants for local industry in support of 'sovereign capabilities' and 'defence innovation'.
The Department of Defence (DoD) said on 4 April that seven local small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will receive a total investment of AUD2.6 million (USD1.85 million) from a Sovereign Industrial Capability (SIC) grants programme worth AUD17 million a year.
The SIC projects to receive the financial assistance include those to develop firearm testing infrastructure, advanced cyber security, electronic warfare support, and crystal manufacturing capacity for defence.
The grants are the first to be awarded since the SIC programme was launched under the 2018 Defence Industrial Capability Plan.
