The US government has handed over additional Metal Shark patrol boats to the Vietnam Coast Guard, the US Embassy in Hanoi announced on 1 April. The deal – valued at USD12 million – is indicative of the two countries’ increasingly close defence and security ties, it said.
The Metal Shark boats will be operated by the Vietnam Coast Guard’s south-central Region 3 and be used in maritime security and law enforcement roles. The new boats join 12 other Metal Shark patrol boats that were delivered in batches in 2017 and 2018 and are operated by the north-central Region 2 and the southern-most Region 4 respectively.
