USN fleshes out plans for XLUUV programme

28 March 2019

Fresh details of Boeing’s effort to develop and manufacture a new class of Extra Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (XLUUV) for the US Navy (USN) has emerged.

The USN’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) confirmed on 27 March that the total awarded amount to the company – covering the delivery of five XLUUVs and associated support elements – to USD274.4 million. Work is expected to be completed by December 2022.

NAVSEA had earlier announced on 13 February a USD43 million contract modification to Boeing for the fabrication, test, and delivery of four Orca XLUUVs and associated support. However, the specific contract award amount was withheld at that time as it was considered source-selection sensitive information.
