Romania has declared initial operational capability for its first 12 F-16s. During the ceremony at the 86th Air Force Base 'Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociornita' in Borcea on 14 March, Romanian Defence Minister Gabriel Leş said, "Today we are writing an important page in the history of the Romanian Air Force … through the missions that will be carried out starting today by the 53rd Fighter Squadron, Romanian airspace will be better defended. The 86th Air Base was reborn with the decision to host F-16 aircraft … this place can be said to be the restarting point for the Romanian Air Force … a first step in the materialisation of the major multirole aircraft capability."
