USAF seeks more next-generation area-attack weapons to replace cluster munitions

17 March 2019

The US Air Force (USAF) is to more than double the number of next-generation area-attack weapons it is to procure to replace the cluster munitions it is obligated to retire.

The service disclosed on 14 March that it is to increase its total procurement of Bomb Live Unit (BLU)-136/B warheads from between 1,000 and 6,000 over four years, to an about 15,000 over the same period.

This number covers domestic and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and, as is usual with such procurements, production will be spread over two contractors.

The USAF issued its initial request for information (RFI) for the development of BLU-136/B in February 2018.
