Damen looks for collaboration opportunities in the Philippines

13 March 2019

Damen Shipyards has outlined an intention to expand co-operation with counterparts in the Philippines as part of an effort to meet expanding naval and commercial shipbuilding requirements in the Southeast Asian country.

A company spokesperson told Jane’s on 13 March that Damen officials have recently visited the Philippines, with a view to deepening collaboration with local companies.

However, the spokesperson also confirmed that Damen does not intend to invest in a shipyard in Subic Bay, currently owned by the local subsidiary of South Korean group Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC).

Earlier this year HHIC-Philippines disclosed that it owed state-run lenders more than USD400 million and in January filed for voluntary rehabilitation in a regional court.
