Thales ships first modular cylindrical array for Collins submarine sonar upgrade

12 March 2019

Thales UK has shipped the first replacement bow sonar array for Australia's Collins-class submarine upgrade programme.

The new modular cylindrical array (MCA) will be installed on HMAS Waller as part of the Collins Sonar Capability Assurance Program (CSCAP), for which Thales was contracted in late 2016. The CSCAP - being delivered under Project SEA 1439 Phase 6 - forms part of efforts to extend the service life of the Royal Australian Navy's six Collins-class submarines into the 2030s and potentially beyond.

Based on Sonar 2076 'thin bow' array technology already embodied in the UK Royal Navy's Astute-class nuclear attack submarines, the new MCA has been delivered by design and manufacturing teams at Thales UK facilities in Cheadle and Templecombe.
