UK sets sights on Harpoon missile replacement

11 March 2019

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is set to move forward with the competitive acquisition of an interim ship-launched heavyweight anti-ship missile system to succeed the current GWS 60/Harpoon Block 1C system in Royal Navy (RN) service.

A prior information notice (PIN) published on 5 March by the Torpedoes, Tomahawk and Harpoon (TTH) project team in MoD's Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) organisation laid out a possible requirement for a Next Generation Surface Ship Guided Weapon (SSGW) to enter service in 2023. The nascent procurement has an estimated value between GBP100 million and GBP200 million (between USD130 million and USD260 million).
