Following the success of Army Warfighting Experiment (AWE18) Autonomous Warrior (Land), held on Salisbury Plain in November-December, UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson announced at the Autonomous Exploitation Conference in London on 5 March 2019 that GBP66 million (USD85.9 million) from UK defence's multi-million pound Transformation Fund would be used to fast-track three military robotic projects onto the battlefield this year.

Williamson said the fund was put in place so "Britain will be ready to face any emerging threats." The projects "will help the army make sure that we are always ahead of the curve and ahead of our adversaries".

The first project will receive GBP31 million for unmanned surveillance systems such as FLIR Systems' Black Hornet 3 nano unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
