Thales has developed a version of its TopAxyz inertial navigation system for use on land platforms and showcased it at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference 2019 (IDEX 2019) in Abu Dhabi. It has been selected for the French Army’s Jaguar vehicle, part of the Scorpion programme.
The core of the system is the TopAxyz inertial measurement unit (IMU), which consists of a PIXYS ring laser gyroscope (RLG) and an accelerometer. The RLG is a monolithic gyro block with three axes that has no mechanically assembled parts and is therefore extremely stable, according to a Thales representative. The IMU is in use in a range of civil and military programmes, including Airbus A350 models, Arianespace’s Ariane launch vehicle, and the Tiger helicopter.
