Repeating allegations that the United States violated the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened “asymmetric actions” against countries that accept the deployment of any new US medium-range missiles or “contain decision-making centres for the missile systems threatening us”.
Delivering his State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on 20 February, the Russian leader accused the US of withdrawing from the INF Treaty after violating it by using medium-range target missiles and deploying launchers capable of firing ground-launched cruise missiles in Romania and Poland. “First, they violate everything, then they look for excuses and appoint a guilty party,” he said.
