A Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) Mitsubishi F-2B fighter aircraft operating from Tsuiki Air Base in Fukuoka Prefecture crashed into the Sea of Japan (also known as East Sea) near Yamaguchi Prefecture on 20 February.
The two crew members, who managed to eject, were rescued via helicopter and remain conscious, an JASDF spokesperson told Jane's .
The incident, which marks the first-ever crash of an F-2 aircraft, took place at 09:18 h local time, about 130 km northeast of Tsuiki Air Base during a routine combat training mission.
The spokesperson said that the service has decided to ground its F-2 fleet until the aircraft are deemed safe to fly again.
